Najib Razak may continue playing stupid and acting as if nothing’s wrong despite the scandals, but it’s doubtful that many, including world leaders, believe him.
KUALA LUMPUR: In his latest blog posting, a political analyst was left wondering whether Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak still has even a bit of humanity left in him or whether is he just “playing stupid” and “demonising” everyone else’s perceptions of him.
“How can he put on a poker face when the whole world knows, having read all sorts of news, about the 1MDB (1Malaysia Development Berhad) scandal and the billions transferred to his private accounts?” wrote Shahbudin Husin, the analyst.
“How can he put on a convincing front before the whole world which knows he sacked an Attorney-General who was investigating him for wrongdoing?”
Shahbudin was commenting on Najib turning up in California for the US-Asean Summit. “How many of the nine other leaders gathered there believe that Najib returned USD620 million out of the USD681 million donation on the grounds that it was not used?”
“Or were they just tickled pink and had a good laugh about it?”
In fact, added the analyst, “Do any of the people he meets and talks to really believe wholeheartedly, in their heart of hearts, that the RM2.6 billion sum was a donation?”
After all, pointed out Shahbudin, “If Malaysians overseas can be faced with endless questions on what has happened to the country (to the point of it becoming mired in this sorry state of affairs), wouldn’t those same questions be plaguing the minds of everyone Najib meets, including those leaders whom Najib has gone to meet in California?”
