Former law minister says present "one-man rule" in the country today worse than the Japanese invasion or being overrun by communists.
PETALING JAYA: Former law minister Zaid Ibrahim has called for a “national unity council” to be set up so the nation can get rid of Prime Minister Najib Razak and his group of “lackeys”.
Saying this council must be made up of Umno dissidents and members of the Opposition, Zaid said the people cannot hope that the Malays Rulers would step in to do “something positive”.
His suggestion comes hot on the heels of a statement by Attorney-General Apandi Ali that he was considering imposing stiffer penalties such as life imprisonment and whipping, for those found guilty of leaking government secrets and journalists who reported on it.
“What we need now is a broad coalition of national leaders who share the view that Najib is a cancer that must be removed.
“Let’s start by having a leadership summit, to formalise the creation of this national unity council,” he wrote in his latest blog entry.
Likening the political situation in the country presently to be “far worse than the communists and the Japanese invasion” of the past, Zaid bemoaned that Malaysia was an independent nation and a modern state but with people “willing to put up with a one-man rule supported by lackeys like the one we have now”.
“As a nation, we have become an international embarrassment. If we as a people are still unable to react and unite against such a leader, then we are truly a nation of idiots.”
He wanted former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad to lead the charge, supported by others like Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man of PAS, Azmin Ali of PKR, and others like DAP and Parti Amanah Negara leaders, who he said should represent the interim council to deal with three key issues, i.e. a Truth Commission on 1Malaysia Development Berhad; an interim leader to take over when Najib steps down; and the appointments of a new Finance Minister, civil service chief, police chief and attorney-general.
“There is helplessness everywhere, but the rakyat needs leaders to galvanise and bring them together. They need the political leaders to show them the way. They need guidance, inspiration and hope.
“Don’t tell me that the likes of Tun Dr Mahathir, Tuan Ibrahim, Lim Kit Siang, Mat Sabu, Azmin Ali and Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim are equally helpless in the face of Najib’s onslaught?”
