Kadir Jasin says he should be a true leader for the youth instead of focusing on his own political interests.
KUALA LUMPUR: Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin should fulfil his responsibilities as a youth leader instead of looking out only for his political interests, says veteran journalist A Kadir Jasin.
Speaking to FMT, Kadir urged Khairy to lead the country’s young generation on the path that will ensure their wellbeing.
“I used to have high hopes on him,” he said. “He was supposed to represent the change that Umno and the youth needed by caring not only for the wellbeing of his party and the Malays, but also the nation as a whole.
“Unfortunately, he prefers to play politics instead of living up to expectations.”
To young politicians like Khairy, he said, politics should serve as a means to an end.
The youth leader should not be too concerned about the consequences of speaking out against Umno’s wrongdoings, he added.
“Khairy could face suspension, but I believe he would be able to face it head on as he is still young. He has time to fight his way back even after being suspended for two or three years.”
Kadir also addressed the problem of a lack of young faces in Umno, saying Khairy should not be the only one standing in line to replace the ageing leaders.
“Young leaders in Umno are dead,” he said. “They themselves chose to die away although at first I was really counting on around nine or ten other young candidates.”
Umno President and Prime Minister Najib Razak is alleged to be on a crusade against those criticising his administration over various scandals associated with it.
