KUALA LUMPUR: Ousted Kedah Menteri Besar Mukhriz Mahathir’s name may be on everybody’s lips, noted a political analyst in his latest blog posting, but questions have arisen over his immediate future. “If there’s every likelihood that he won’t be chosen by Umno as a candidate, come 2018, he has to consider his options.”
After all, Mukhriz thinks that Umno will continue to be weak so long as it’s led by party president and Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak, added Shahbudin Husin, the analyst. “He no longer has any confidence in Najib’s leadership, whether in running the party or running the country.”
But Shahbudin noted that Mukhriz is not alone, since sacked Deputy Prime Minister and Umno Deputy President Muhyiddin Yassin and his father, former Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, share this opinion.
The 3Ms, as Shahbudin called them, “do not want to see Najib remaining as Prime Minister after the 14th General Election in 2018″.
Still, warned Shahbudin, expelling Najib from the premiership through Umno is no longer a realistic move. “An election is the most suitable way to oust him.”
However, the chances of Mukhriz and Muhyddin being on the list of Umno candidates for 2018, noted Shahbudin, may be practically non-existent and therefore not worthy of consideration.
“[Thus] if it’s about keeping alive the movement to get rid of Najib, the 3Ms (Mahathir, Mukhriz and Muhyiddin) should not dismiss the possibility of working together with the informal opposition alliance in Parliament.”
Of course, explained Shahbudin, this does not mean that any of these men must defect to the Opposition. “One way is to forge political cooperation through an NGO or an umbrella body in the Opposition, or any other organisation that would service this aim.”
In any case, the most important matter would be having these leaders contest in the next election, forging political cooperation, and making it a one-on-one contest between the Opposition and BN/Umno. “The greater objective is to end Najib’s political career.
“But if the 3Ms are unable to cooperate with the Opposition, then it’s likely that Najib will bury them before they can bury him.”
Even now, the possibility that Najib has plans to do even more to ruin their chances at bringing change could not be dismissed. “Najib will try to reduce Mahathir’s influence while isolating and marginalising Mukhriz and Muhyiddin. He sees them as distractions and personal threats to be dealt with as soon as possible.”
