Do not depend on Mahathir alone, says the veteran journalist.
KUALA LUMPUR: A prominent critic of Prime Minister Najib Razak has urged patriotic Malaysians of all political persuasions to band together in a movement to “save Malaysia” from the allegedly destructive administration in Putrajaya.
Speaking to FMT, veteran journalist A Kadir Jasin said “far too many people” were expecting former premier Mahathir Mohamad to single-handedly take the nation out of troubled waters.
He said it was time for all Malaysians, including members of the ruling and opposition coalitions, to stand with Mahathir under a united front to fight for the good of the country.
“There is only one Mahathir and there’ll never be another,” he said.
“Nobody, including any of his children, can be like him. No one should be compared to Mahathir but everyone should aim to learn from him and try his or her best to do what he did for the country.
“And instead of depending on one man, we should move forward on the basis of a movement.”
He said the movement should take in everyone who cared enough about the nation’s future and should be spearheaded by “leaders who want to save Malaysia, whether they are from Umno, PAS, DAP, PKR or Parti Amanah Negara”.
Kadir criticised Umno leaders who have become Mahathir detractors, saying they should show respect to their longest-serving former president instead of “cursing and praying for his death”.
“You can disagree with Mahathir, but show some respect to him,” he said. “How could this Umno bunch show such disrespect when the world respects Mahathir? When people in China, in Nepal, in Africa, and even the Arabs respect him?
“Those in the Cabinet and in the Umno Supreme Council would not have been where they are if it wasn’t for him.”
He said that Najib, particularly, should be grateful to Mahathir for his rapid rise to the top.
